North. Identity through the landscape is a video and painting installation that explores the influence that growing up surrounded by a particular landscape has on an individual. This project focuses on the case of northwestern Spain, in territories such as Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria, paradises full of history where the most rugged nature has merged with industrialization and the manipulation of the environment, and which face a reality far removed from the idealization of tourism that is usually sold.

The work delves into the formation of a northern identity that is given by the landscape in which its members develop, and it enters into their collective memory to exalt it and give voice to a current generation marked by globalization, climate change and the consequences of the economic crisis of 2008, which led to the abandonment of many industries and a significant loss of population. The landscape acts as a mirror in which all this is reflected, and how it becomes a sign of identity that further enriches its spirit.

Through the combination of painting and video, a parallel is established between landscape – individual, natural – manipulated and traditional – contemporary that speaks of inhabiting a place and of a person’s roots, from subjective experience. The work consists of 5 recordings projected onto 5 frames of 130 x 90 cm, each with a specific landscape that responds to different characteristics of this northern identity.
